Copus Music: Journal

August & September 2010 - August 17, 2010

SUNDAY, AUGUST 21st: 'Virgin of the Candles' is a short film written and directed by Argentinian-born Victoria Giordana. Victoria was earning her master's degree from Academy of Art College when she asked Wendy Loomis to compose the music for her thesis film. This past week 'Virgin' was chosen to be included in the International Latino Film Festival to be held at the famous Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood. Wendy's score to this wonderful short includes musical performances by Barbara Jaspersen (vocals), Monica Williams (alto and pan flutes), Jessie Webber (bata drums), and Suellen Primose (cello). The film premieres on Sunday, August 21st, and Wendy and Monica will attend. Congratulations to all!

NEWS ABOUT OUR ARTISTS ...

COPUS

* The band is busily working on its new CD material and plans to go into the studio this summer. Copus will be recording your favorite tracks including 'If In Life', 'Later Than You Think' remix, 'Nine Foot Egg' and others. Word has it that they will include a special Jimi Hendrix cover called 'Merman'. Stay tuned for release dates.

* The group has been asked to perform at the San Mateo County Fair in August; we will let you know exact dates as they are confirmed.

* COPUS is pleased to have percussionist Rick Campbell grace the group as its newest member. A native Californian, Rick was influenced musically by Bob Marley, Carlos Santana, and ‘a lot of funk’. He plays drums, congas, timbales, and has performed and toured with the George Coates Performance Arts ensemble, the Funkanauts, Native Elements Reggae Band, and France-based band The Motivators. COPUS is happy to have his talents and spirit in the house!

* Copus Music Productions will be bringing 'World Music Night' to the former, legendary "Biscuits And Blues" nightclub of San Francisco this September. Now known as The Union Room, make plans early to attend.

PHOENIX RISING

* CD 'Ascension' has been nominated for 'Best Acoustic Album of the Year' by the Los Angeles Music Awards, so the group will be attending the nomination event in October, the ceremony in August, and will be performing a showcase in

LA on July 26th. http://www.lamusicawards.com

* Latest review of the CD ... “One of the more interesting releases so far this year, Ascension from Phoenix Rising (pianist Wendy Loomis and flutist Monica Williams) musically “interprets” the seven charkas using an assortment of acoustic instruments played by both the duo and six different guest artists. Despite this “mixed bag” approach, the CD’s musical theme is manifested by the presence of Loomis (who composed the tracks) and Williams (who arranged them). Other artists on the CD are Jennifer Lim on guzheng, Debra Podjed on tabla, Jessica Styler on hang drum, Suellen Primose on cello, Irina Mikhailova on vocals, and Karen Segal on guitar. You can tell by these diverse global instruments that the album bears some world music influences, but overall this is better described as contemporary acoustic music. Or you could simply say these eight women craft music of warmth and beauty that touches the heart and soul with gentleness and grace. Either way, Ascension is a musical delight to be cherished.” ~ Bill Binkelman, New Age Retailer. http://www.newageretailer.com

* In addition to their myspace page, Phoenix Rising has a new website. Check it out at: http://www.phoenixrisingmusic.net

WENDY LOOMIS

* Wendy is currently composing the music for a film by the talented Argentian-born Victoria Giordana called 'Virgin of the Candles'. The score will include Cuban batta drums, vocals, and cello. Stay tuned for upcoming screening dates!

ROYAL KENT POETRY

RHYME THE MOUNTAINS

I rhyme the mountains

I climb the stars

I fill my cup with fine wine

I juggle the sun, moon and earth

I turn the wheels of time

I spread my wings

For to fly through a thousand lives

I’ll never die

Yet for you my love lies

When I awaken

I warm the ocean to wash the sleep

From my eyes

Then it is playtime with the universe

A game of chess with her wise

From there it could be

Anything you see

As I take on experience masterfully

Yet for you my heart cries

I dream of dreams that would

Make you scream

I’ve witnessed things men have never seen

I spend my days and nights exploring

The landscape of my mind

Still I find

That until we are together again

All I can do

Is sigh
